Category: Cannot open link to PubMed abstracts
Question: When I click on the Read the Abstract... link, PubMed doesn’t open.
Answer:
This is likely because you have Windows XP Service Pack 2 installed on your computer (released August 25, 2004) and have the Popup Blocker Setting set to High. You can correct this problem by either of the following fixes:

Solution 1
(i) on the toolbar in Internet Explorer go to Tools / Internet Options and select the Privacy tab. Then select Settings under the Popup Blocker area at the bottom of the screen;
(ii) in the Address of website allowed field, add http://plus.mcmaster.ca/preobesity/Default.aspx and then click the Add button. The PRE-OBESITY+ website should now appear under the Allowed sites section.

Solution 2
2. Follow the instructions for (i) in Solution 1 above, then go to Notification and Filter Level and change the Filter Level from High to Medium.

Using either of the options above should allow PubMed to open in PRE-OBESITY+. If you still are unable to access PubMed, please contact us.

Category: Links in email alerts not working
Question: Why do the links in my email alert not work?
Answer:
This is likely because HTML is not enabled in your email program.

In Outlook, please go to Tools / Options / Mail Format and ensure that HTML is chosen for "Send in this message format."

In Outlook Express, please go to Tools / Options / Read and under "Read Messages" ensure that the "Read all messages in plain text" option is NOT selected.

In Eudora, please go to Tools / Options / Viewing Mail and ensure that "Enable allowable executables in HTML" IS selected.

Category: Logging In
Question: Why am I unable to log in?
Answer:
This is likely because you have cookies disabled in your browser. Either of the following solutions should correct the problem; however, Solution 1 is a more secure option:

Solution 1
In Internet Explorer, go to Tools / Internet Options / Privacy. Under the "Web sites" section, click on the Edit button, under Manage sites add http://plus.mcmaster.ca/obesity/Default.aspx to the Address of web site field, and click on Allow.

Solution 2
In Internet Explorer, go to Tools / Internet Options / Privacy and move the security bar down until it no longer says Block All Cookies (about Medium-High on the scale is good; however, some browsers require the setting to be set at low).

Category: Only receiving alerts with Preliminary Clinical Research Articles
Question: Only receiving alerts with Preliminary Research Articles
Answer:
Email alerts are sent out to users based on the research area(s) chosen when registering for PRE-OBESITY+. If you have only chosen Epidemiology (incidence and prevalence) or Pathogenesis and Physiology, you will only receive Preliminary Research Articles, as these research areas only contain articles that do not meet our criteria for clinical readiness and report on an earlier stage of research in humans. To check which research area(s) you chose, please login to the system and click on My Account

Category: RSS Feed
Question: What is RSS and how do I use it in PRE-OBESITY+?
Answer:
What is RSS?
RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is the new and easy way to receive automatic updates from websites. It is an XML file that can be read by special feed reading software. Instead of revisiting a site several times to check for updates, news readers scan for updates and display them for you. Using a news reader means you can stay in touch with many different sources of news and information.

How do I a get a news reader?
There are various news readers available for download from the Internet. Some of the best news readers are free. Click the following URL to locate one suitable for you: http://blogspace.com/rss/readers.

How do I use RSS?
First, install your news reader or aggregator software. The orange icons with "RSS" or "XML" denote an available feed. To subscribe, click on the icon and add the URL (from the address bar on your browser) into your reader. The reader will display the latest content specific to that feed, each with a synopsis and link to the full version of the information.

Want to learn more about RSS feeds?
There are many sites explaining what feeds do and how they work, such as this one at http://www.sixapart.com/about/feeds.
